2022: don’t buy cameras, buy used cameras
Do you like the dystopia in which they have made the world plunge? Well, even the world of photography is affected.
The major camera manufacturers are in a black crisis. Because they have to sell cameras. But between the crisis of ideas and the loss of enthusiasm linked to the pandemic in which many photographers have fallen to the odd idea that photos can be taken with a smartphone, people is not buying anymore real cameras.
The crisis is profound and not only the downward trend in sales. Canon has officially announced that it will release the latest reflex and subsequently they will be mirrorless only. And we already have news of a mirrorless camera that will be offered at a price of 10,000 dollars.
But the craziest thing and the reason why I write this piece is that they have problems with procuring parts for the construction of the cameras and subsequent problems with distributing the products. This generates a problem: the photo brands are already communicating that the customer will be able to buy a camera that will be delivered to him only after 6 months.
While prices are raising up in a crazy way they are proposing something that is even more insane. How you pretend that I anticipate you my money to have a camera that I will use in 6 months? Are you dumb, guys?
No way. This is the reason why I suggest to my readers to stop thinking on new cameras. Just buy in the second-hand market. Am I suggesting that camera brands go bankrupt? No. They have to rethink their entire strategy in the face of the situation, otherwise they will not survive. And this passes through a price control, maybe to make all together.
In any case I focus my attention on photographers. I am sorry but that is my audience target and I have to give some good advices to them. So here we go: STOP TO PURCHASE NEW CAMERAS. The old ones are good to make high quality photography. Look at me using a 70 bucks manual lens. Look at my work using a 2011 old Reflex camera. Buy cameras, but do it in the second-hand market.
If camera brands think to be in crisis, well also we the photographers we may be experiencing the crisis. And we have to re-think completely our approach. just because I can’t give you my money for a thing I will use in 6 months.
