A zoom pancake lens: the first touch with Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 14-42mm

One of the biggest advantages of the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 ASPH is its price. It is one of the most affordable lenses in its class, making it a great option for budget-minded photographers. I did have new this lens 2 days ago.

First test shot.

This lens's small size and weight come in handy for carrying around during busy shoots or while traveling light. On the secodary camera will be usegful especially because I will bring it with me in the barrios.

While not the most versatile zoom, the 14-42mm range can still be useful for capturing various street aspects. I can get wider environmental shots showcasing the scene's vibe and then zoom in for close-up details or portraits. Creativity and resourcefulness are key assets for any photographer. I am ready to embrace the lens's strengths and work around its limitations.

The open contrast between light and shadows can be a challenge, especially with budget-friendly zoom lenses like the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 ASPH. However, with my expertise and some strategic approaches, I can still manage these situations and capture compelling street shots.

You know that I am not that photographer pretending to work with expensive gear. I believe that , even with limitations, the beauty of photography lies in the photographer's vision and approach. We can’t sing praises to Miroslav Tichy and then shooting only with the best equipment. It would be inconsistent.

Conclusions

As I repeat often for my daily work priority is to count with light equipment. I think is cool to count with a zoom lens that is a pancake. The lens even when is on it never has the proboscis effect which is something I want to avoid when I point the camera at unknown people, especially in an approach like mine where I shoot from very close up.

Usually I am not a zoom lens photographer, of course I prefer prime lenses, that I recommend also as a photo coach: prime lenses are the best solutions for advanced photographers but also for those in need of learning composition. Considering that Pen E-PL2 is only my secondary camera I think this lens is a fair compromise. Honestly I was thinking to the Olympus 17mm f2.8 before my purchase: with that lens I became a professional photographer, realizing a lot of my most appreciated work (the oriental woman in Los Angeles and the Reality Remade project) but maybe in future I can consider to buy the 17mm f1.8 that is even better.

On January I will start a project and I just need the 2 cameras to make it. I will work with 2 Olympus Pen with 2 Panasonic Lumix lenses and this adds interest to what I have in mind.
