Canon model 7 + Industar 61 + Fomapan 400 Action
I am pleased to share on my blog the results achieved with the first black and white roll shot with the Canon 7 35mm rangefinder camera
The camera
When it comes to film photography my weapon of choice is the Canon model 7. Paired with the Industar 61, a Russian-made 52mm lens, it delivers a unique character I truly love. The lens has sharpness and soul, with that unmistakable vintage rendering.
That is exactly the reason why I stillshoot film.
I think film is different and we can’t pretend to apply the same approach of digital.
The roll
For the first roll with the Canon Model 7, I loaded a Fomapan 400 Action. This film has a gritty, classic feel that fits perfectly with my black and white vision. I love its contrast and grain: raw, honest, and full of character. It reacts beautifully to light and shadow, giving my shots a strong mood.
My way to work
I am not using the lightmeter of the camera. I just use the Sunny 16 rule to expose. When I went out the sky was cloudy. The light conditions, I expected, would not be very easy. The combination of the weather conditions and the particular character of this emulsion shape have created this dark mood, where not everything is legible, sharpening the mystery of the subjects of the photos. Some images remind me of Brassaï for the aesthetic.
A solid first test that confirmed: this setup speaks my language. The selection of images you see here proposed has a consistency and I have chosen only those photographs that match my intent and my interest: urban landscape photography in my own way.
