Coyoacán Portrait Session Street Style with Carmen (video)
I am really happy to share finally this work made with Carmen, a Spanish woman arrived to Mexico few days ago.
Most of the time, I get contacted to shoot portraits. But every now and then, I’m the one who reaches out to a potential subject. It happens when I have a specific project in mind or when someone catches my attention: someone who sparks inspiration just by their presence, their energy, or the way they exist in photos.
That’s exactly what happened with Carmen. She’s not a model: she runs a marketing agency. A Spanish woman who spent her last years in Lisbon, our paths crossed on Substack. She had shared one of my articles about Mexico City, adding a comment about how it was nice to read just days before she herself left for the Mexican capital. That intrigued me. After adding her on Substack and seeing a couple of photos, I knew I had to propose a shoot.
We met in a downtown café, talked, and agreed on a collaboration. Last weekend, we finally brought it to life in Coyoacán: a place that never fails to deliver magic. We wandered through its charming streets, letting the session unfold naturally in a relaxed, effortless way.
Even though Carmen isn’t a model, she moved in front of the camera like someone who had done this a hundred times. And honestly? It turned out to be one of the best portrait sessions I’ve ever done.
I know some people want to know some technical details. We started at 15pm. The light was still hard. I worked with my Canon EOS 5D M2 with the Yongnuo 50mm f1.8 and the new acquisition, the Sony a6000 with the kit lens 16-50mm. For the video I used the Canon EOS M200.
I am really happy with the performance offered by Sony. In fact, I took more photos than I expected with this camera.
From the point of view of the approach I give priority to the flow. We need to reach a particular mood in the session, both model and photographer. The relaxed and carefree atmosphere is essential. The result was an absolutely brilliant session, where understanding and chemistry did the rest, producing, in my opinion, excellent results.
A curious fact: Carmen is the first model to carry with her a camera much loved by street photographers, the Ricoh GR, and she too is a street photographer.
