Oaxaca Día de Muertos 2026: Why Waiting Could Cost You Your Place
Every year, it happens.
Someone writes to me in September asking if there is still room available for the Oaxaca Día de Muertos expedition.
Sometimes there is.
More often, there isn't.
Or the bigger problem: they discover that the remaining accommodation options are limited, expensive, or far from where the experience takes place.
This is exactly why I am announcing the Oaxaca Día de Muertos Photography Expedition 2026 now.
The expedition will take place from October 30 to November 2, 2026, and registrations are officially open.
After leading photographers through Día de Muertos celebrations since 2015, I can tell you one thing with certainty: Oaxaca remains one of the most extraordinary places in the world for documentary and street photography during these dates.
Not because it is picturesque.
Not because it is colorful.
Not because it produces easy photographs.
But because it is real.
During these days, the city reveals itself in ways that are difficult to describe unless you have experienced it firsthand. Public and private life merge. Memory becomes visible. The streets become a living stage where joy, grief, celebration, family, faith, and community coexist.
As photographers, we are given access to moments that are increasingly rare in today's world: genuine human experiences unfolding naturally in front of our cameras.
That is what this expedition is about.
Not collecting postcards.
Not hunting for clichés.
Not photographing the same images everyone else photographs.
We will approach Oaxaca as documentary photographers.
We will observe.
We will wait.
We will engage with the environment.
We will learn to recognize meaningful moments and build visual stories around them.
Throughout four intensive days, participants will receive field guidance, editing feedback, mentoring, and support in creating a cohesive body of work rather than a collection of isolated images.
The group is intentionally limited to 7 photographers.
That number will not increase.
I have always believed that photography education works best in small groups where meaningful conversations, individual feedback, and direct mentoring remain possible.
If you are considering joining us, my advice is simple.
Do not make your decision based on whether there will still be a place available in the expedition.
Make it based on whether there will still be a place available in Oaxaca.
The city reaches capacity remarkably early every year. Hotels fill. Airbnb options disappear. Prices rise steadily as Día de Muertos approaches.
For this reason, registrations will close on July 31, 2026, although the expedition may reach capacity before that date.
If documenting one of Mexico's most important cultural traditions has been on your photographic bucket list, now is the time to act.
October arrives faster than most people think.
And Oaxaca fills even faster.
I look forward to welcoming a new group of photographers to the streets, cemeteries, markets, and neighborhoods of Oaxaca for what promises to be another unforgettable edition of this experience.
