Color Street Photography by Alex Coghe, 2022

Many fall into the great misunderstanding and the age-old discussion on what street photography is and what is not starts again.

Let’s stop this.

It is more important become aware of whether or not we are street photographers.

Am I a street photographer? Yes, I am.

Why? I do most of my photos on the street. When I think about making photos I think to be on a street.

To be a street photographer is a lifestyle.

And yes Street Photography is a way of life. An attitude. A state of mind.

To be a street photographer is like to be a skateboarder or a surfer. It is not posing like that. The important is not even how you do it. It is important if you do it.

This means also that you can have the references of masters or you can have mentors. But nobody is going to say you in the act of making photos how you do it. To the end is just you and your camera.

About the camera…also this choice is totally personal. Maybe someone is going to say to a surfer if he/she needs to use a longboard or a shortboard? To the end of the game is up to you. And I know today is not seen cool using certain cameras, but…again, criticism can only come from those who pose with photography.

By being street photographers we accept to be part of the public place. We accept the rules that the street imposes. There are codes that change from one place to another.

The only thing that matters is being in place. And making the photos.

Street Photography is not a genre. It is not a type of photography. Street Photography is an essence. Something that only if you are in street photography can you understand.

There isn't much more to add.
