Street Photography Highlights January 2025

So this month…

Street Photography is a feeling. It requires levels of emotional and physical involvement. This photo evokes a metropolitan spirit. the one that I learned to make mine when I was still a child, without a camera.

Thinking in black and white results in images like this.

Of the many images I have of the Lagunilla market taken this month, I chose this one as a demonstration of how to get interesting photos in a market. Mario Cattaneo was a master and I refer to him.

This one is also at Lagunilla, but here it is a shot at an ultra close range. Sometimes you can explain certain things from a distance, other times, like in this case, I need to shoot in the face.

Street photography is not dead but that idea of ​​street photography that many people had during the boom period it encountered is dead. Dead is that street photography of the visual game, of the photographer completely focused on himself, dead is that street photography promoted by festivals and photography contests. The one that aims to make you laugh and is an end in itself, a pile of useless photography that does not stand the test of time and that lasts the space of a scroll on Instagram. Luckily street photography existed a long time before all this and will continue to exist after this, regardless of those rich kids who played with it for a while.

I have never stopped being connected with that street photography which is social reportage, I am an authentic Bressonian in this sense and I still get emotional when I see scenes like this.

And here we are at the first color photo of this month's selection. Which could have been black and white, and that shows my vision, but I took it in color and so...

You say street but street is many things. And here I am interested in showing how the composition results in something that has its own reason to be proposed here.

Here I am satisfied with my position in relation to the framed scene. How I managed the space and therefore a composition that makes sense comes out.

Meeting photo yes but also captured moment. That expression then...

THOUGHTS

I've started the year in full swing. And in fact this selection is really a tiny slice of the work I've done this month. I don't remember such a fast start in January. I have changed some things and others will change that will decisively influence my photography.

I am aware I proposed recently more color work than I expected, but black and white is my first language and I will continue to work more in black and white.
