Tlatelolco: my personal tribute to a barrio where I want to go and photograph more
The urban complex of Nonoalco Tlatelolco is an architectural jewel because it represents the climax of what was the architecture of the 20th century in Mexico City.
With this shot I thought of paying homage to a place that amazes for its architecture and also for being an absolutely alive popular barrio. Tlatelolco is full of street art a tour that is certainly worth doing. I think to have been able to capture through a minimalist composition the essence of what is Tlatelolco, in a recognizable building that I see as a symbol of this urban area which was also important in the pre-Hispanic era.
To the north of Mexico City is the place that Carlos Monsivaís once described as "the utopia of Mexico without neighborhoods." The Nonoalco Tlatelolco Housing Complex, designed by the architect Mario Pani, is a clear reflection of the dream of the modern movement in Mexico, a place that began to be built in 1960 and that over time and its events (like the huge earthquake in 1985), has preserved the character of all the moments that have passed.
Sometimes we tend to forget the importance of arquitecture for the images we produce as street photographers. If humanity is fundamental for our observation architecture is the backdrop to the scenes we capture with our cameras.
