Video: is there a street photography mafia?
A thought provoking video on my channel
Let me expand on this further. In the past I have seen how if you dare to point out how there are aesthetic and approach trends in street photography that lead to creative desertification, it is put in a sort of black book.
Furthermore, you can enter the black book even if you have political ideas that do not conform to what the masses have.
Street Photography is not very different from any cultural movement in our society so while in most cases there are people who gravitate in this world who are positive, usually those who are in charge of "pulling the strings" are the worst. In the past I clearly had the feeling that things had to be respected in their compliance and therefore conformity or I was out. Obviously I wasn't there and I preferred singing individually rather than the choir.
When you see that a guy with a paternalistic attitude comes along to give you advice on how to be on the internet or even on the fact that "for me you rock more in color" you already know what is their goal.
And so my exposure in favor of a certain photography rather than another and giving space to certain photographers who were certainly not at the center of what was the great exposure offered by the usual festivals wasn't taken well by certain circles.
I am sorry but the idea that street photography has become a sort of visual game and nothing else really doesn't sit well with me. At festivals, more or less the same ones are imposed as winners and always with the same aesthetics, almost always identical, overlapping, copied from those of the judges. That is no good for street photography.
Don't think that I'm somehow offended by not being part of their stuff: believe me it's really the last thing on my mind and I absolutely don't want to be mixed up with them. Many of these individuals are not really street photographers: some were my students with difficulty, a now well-known publisher in the world of street photography didn't even know how to photograph on the street before my instructions with a camera that I sold him. The only thing that annoys me is that I am made out to be a negative person and against street photography: if I speak critically about certain things it is precisely because I love street photography, something I live and breathe every day.
I have done more for street photography in all these years than all the festivals around the world. And i continue to do it. But I cannot accept intellectual dishonesty just for its own gain. With the MASTERS SERIES on YouTube and with my magazines I am making things for other photographers that in my opinion deserve to be known. And meanwhile I offer inspirational content to my audience. I will continue to be a voice of street photography and also a critical thought because I think certain things need to be clarified. Just like I made with this video.
