Why exactly Canon M200? A reasoned guide to the reasons for my choice and an analysis of the M series
After careful consideration, I chose the Canon EOS M200. I will buy it in the next days. Through this post I explain you my reasons.
The Canon EOS M is the most old mirrorless cameras series released by Canon. The Canon EOS M was released on July 23, 2012 introduced as the first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera from Canon. The M series has now been joined by the R series with which Canon is aiming to propose a mirrorless and full frame system.
The Canon M series thinks of the modern photographer, creator of multimedia content, perhaps not only a photographer but also a youtuber, in need of making photos and videos. The M200 in particular is proposed as a camera for YouTubers even proposed with a promotional special package including a tripod and a memory card. It is no coincidence that many decide to buy it more for video than for photography. But analyzing in more detail the various cameras belonging to the M series, the cheapest one has some shortcomings that do not make it preferable to those with more demanding palates.
For example, Many photographers can't work without a viewfinder and that's why they prefer the SLR-style mirrorless M50. Canon EOS M200 has not even a hotshoe and this makes impossible to think about adding an external viewfinder, but guys it would be an error to consider to work in the classic way with this camera. Do you remember? Any camera its way to play. And here we go with my motivations:
Price is the first thing. I think is pretty cool that Canon EOS M200 is the cheapest mirrorless camera released on the market. Yet it counts with a 24mpx APS-C sensor. I don’t need expensive gear to make my work. And by now you will have learned about my approach: I love to work with cheap cameras that are not considered by “serious photographers” because called beginner cameras. It is challenging and I love the challenges. I love to show what I can do with cameras that professionals are not considering at all. It has no sense to me counting already with 2 Canon Rebel to work with a SLR-style camera and, sincerely, I prefer to watch through an optical viewfinder when I frame through that respect to look a small LCD.
Second reason: Canon EOS M200 is lighter and smaller than the other EOS M series cameras. I still can't think of putting it in my pocket, it's not a Ricoh GR, but it has an interchangeable lens system, it's not a compact and it's not a vacuum cleaner.
22mm lens is a 35.2mm lens. And it will be the next purchase. With that lens I back to work with a real 35mm equivalent lens that is my favorite focal lenght.
The fourth motivation is pretty exciting: it will be a modern way for me to approach photography, in a certain sense closer to the smartphone world. After years of zone focusing and manual lenses. I'm going to work with a camera where I'll only focus on what's in front of me, silent and openly shooting from the hip all the time.
I will use the camera also for videos. This is a statement of what I am converting to with different needs than in the past. I feel the need for videos is taking up a lot of space in my activity. This camera is by no means the best for videos, but it is a fair compromise to have something ready to go on any occasion in a simple, unobtrusive, and inconspicuous way.
Street Photography is one of the many reasons to choose this camera. For my approach, for the places where I go to photograph, this camera is ideal. Although many photographers are still stuck in the idea of rangefinder cameras and we look so cool with certain objects, well, I really don’t care how to appear. It is more important what I achieve in terms of images, consistence of the work and street photography is about form and content. I feel also that this camera is not considered much by street photographers and as I said I accept the challenge and you will see through the photos.
The analysis about a new camera passes through the general look to who am I as a photographer. I am also a commercial photographer making portraits, fashion street style and erotica. I always worked with compact cameras allowing me to have a connection with my models. And Canon M200 can be a good asset to my gear, to make also quick cool videos, not only photos.
Less is more is something I believe for real and is not just a pose to me, guys. When I decided to switch to Canon the main reason is because the menu system is the most user-friendly and outstrips the competition by many points. And this is confirmed also with the mirrorless systems produced by Canon.
The camera looks absolutely fun. Sometimes we forget the playful component and yet the ideal camera shouldn't make you experience photography as something complicated and boring. One of the things I love film point & shoots for is that it allows me to think only about shooting. When I photograph I am immersed in the scene, in what is happening around me. I have to support the energy and dynamics that develop in that place. I have to go to the rhythm of the dance. Constantly thinking about changing exposure settings can get frustrating at times.
Maybe I just got tired of manual lenses. maybe I'm getting old. But I just want the result. That is what matters. I don't have to prove to anyone, much less to myself, that I can expose or focus correctly. The time of school is long gone even if I am always willing to learn new things and this change should be read in this sense.
I am now ready for a new step for my photography. I am getting a Canon EOS M200.
