Without 28mm and 35mm
My change in gear is a real change
Often we read, opinions that poeticize the photography of William Klein (wide angle lens) and Saul Leiter (tele lens) by photographers who then do not apply this to their photography, remaining more in the orthodoxy that suggests 28mm and 35mm for the street.
With my switch to Sony, I've undergone a significant transformation in my photography. As a street photographer, I've departed from the conventional "must-have" focal lengths like 28mm and 35mm. Instead, I now wield a 24mm, a 40.5mm, a 50mm, and a 52mm.
This shift has imposed a new approach and mindset on my work. The 40.5mm lens, in particular, has been transformative. Its non-intrusive nature allows me to capture scenes without imposing on the personal space of my subjects, thus infusing my photography with a sense of poetry.
I'm already reaping the benefits of this new perspective. By eschewing the "standard" lenses often touted as essential for street photography, I feel liberated to pursue a more personal and expressive style. This departure from convention has empowered me to explore my creativity more freely, resulting in photography that feels distinctly my own.
Sincerely I don’t know if in future I will back to work with the 28mm and 35mm focal lenght, it is not a problem right now. I feel excited to use lenses that are different from the others. Currently it represents a break from the commonly accepted vision of how a street photographer should work and this going against the rules accepted by everyone obviously pleases me.
I think this goes towards what I do and what is my approach and attitude in photography: I am a street photographer but I don’t do - only - street photography. I am not an observer, above all I'm not one to go with the current trends of what is commonly accepted and exalted today as street photography. My photography is a complex mixture of street, urban, landscape, architecture, portrait. The focal lenghts I am using now fuel my creativity and allow me to do things that are different from the usual approach that I have by using 28mm and 35mm.
