DÍA DE MUERTOS IN MEXICO CITY
DÍA DE MUERTOS IN MEXICO CITY – STREET PHOTOGRAPHY EXPEDITION 2026
Dates: October 27 – November 3, 2026
Participants: Maximum 5
Price: 3,500 USD
Early Bird (until August 30): 3,000 USD
Overview
After ten years leading my Día de Muertos photo expeditions in Oaxaca, I decided to make a change. Oaxaca has become oversaturated with tours and workshops: it’s difficult to find the same intimacy and authenticity I once experienced.
That’s why from 2026 I’ll be running this expedition in Mexico City, a place that in recent years has become incredibly alive during Día de Muertos. The capital now offers endless photographic possibilities: from the San Judas Tadeo procession near Hidalgo to local ofrendas, spontaneous street celebrations, and the quiet corners where tradition and modern life meet.
This is not about costumes or staged Catrinas.
This is street and documentary photography at its core: capturing life as it unfolds, working intuitively, and learning how to translate observation into visual narrative.
What to Expect
Over eight days, we’ll move through different areas of the city, Centro Histórico, Roma, Condesa, Coyoacán, and Xochimilco, exploring how daily life blends with celebration.
You’ll learn to approach people with respect, develop your personal vision, and create a cohesive photographic story from real situations.
There will be moments of intense shooting and moments of reflection: editing sessions, portfolio discussions, and deep conversations about photography and meaning.
The expedition begins with a powerful moment: the San Judas Tadeo procession on October 28, one of the most emotional and visually rich events of the year. From there, we’ll follow the pulse of the city through the days and nights of Día de Muertos.
For Whom
This expedition is for photographers who want to go beyond the surface, who believe that photography is not about decoration but about observation, timing, and honesty.
Experience in street or documentary photography is helpful, but not required: curiosity and openness matter more.
You Will Gain
A cohesive short photo essay created during the week.
Personal feedback on vision, form, and editing.
A deeper understanding of working respectfully and intuitively in public spaces.
The ability to see and photograph with greater awareness.
Gear Recommendations
A small, discreet setup is best:
One camera + a 28mm or 35mm lens (optional 50mm)
Backup batteries and SD cards
Laptop with editing software (Lightroom or Capture One)
Important Note
The detailed itinerary may vary slightly depending on local conditions and the most interesting photographic opportunities at the moment.
The goal is always to stay close to the real pulse of the city.
