GUELAGUETZA IN OAXACA – STREET & DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY EXPEDITION
Dates: July 25 – July 28, 2026
Participants: Maximum 8
Price: 1,900 USD
Early Bird (until May 30): 1,600 USD
Overview
After many years photographing Oaxaca during its most iconic festivities, I wanted to create a short but intense expedition that focuses on what really matters during the Guelaguetza. Not the auditorium show, not the packaged folklore, but the streets. The real soul of these days lives in the calendas, the rehearsals, the groups gathering with their traditional clothing, the neighborhoods celebrating in their own rhythm.
This is documentary and street photography with a grounded approach, working with spontaneity and respect, staying close to people and everyday gestures.
What to Expect
Across four days we’ll move between Oaxaca Centro, Jalatlaco, Xochimilco, and the barrios that host their own Guelaguetza events. You’ll work on timing, intuition, and clarity of vision while navigating crowded, emotional, and visually rich situations.
We pair strong shooting sessions with editing moments and discussions about intention, style, and authorship. It’s a chance to produce a small but meaningful body of work rather than scattered images.
You’ll photograph preparations in the mornings, gatherings and smaller processions, and the energy that builds around the second “Lunes del Cerro” on July 27.
For Whom
This expedition is for photographers who want authenticity over spectacle. If you’re drawn to the human side of traditions and you enjoy observing rather than staging, you’ll connect with this experience.
Experience helps but isn’t required. Curiosity is the real entry ticket.
You Will Gain
A personal short photo essay created during the expedition.
Thoughtful feedback on editing and sequencing.
A clearer understanding of how to move respectfully and confidently in busy public spaces.
More instinctive and conscious shooting habits.
Gear Recommendations
Travel light.
One camera with a 28 or 35mm lens is perfect for the rhythm of Oaxaca.
Bring backup batteries and SD cards.
Laptop with Lightroom or Capture One for review sessions.
Important Note
The itinerary stays flexible. Oaxaca during Guelaguetza is unpredictable, and we will adapt to the moments that offer the strongest photographic value. The goal is to stay close to real life and avoid anything staged or superficial.
