Overview
The Huejotzingo Carnival is one of the most powerful and visually striking celebrations in Mexico. Far from a commercial show, it is a community-driven tradition where battalions of dancers, masked characters, families, and entire neighborhoods come together to preserve a collective memory.
I designed this four-day expedition for photographers who want to experience the celebration from within, focusing on authenticity, human presence, and the chaotic beauty of real life unfolding.
This is not about staged folklore. It’s about energy, emotion, preparation, noise, devotion, and the unique atmosphere created by the people of Huejotzingo.

What to Expect
We will move between streets, gathering points, comparsa routes, and the quieter moments before and after the action. You’ll photograph the iconic battalions, handmade costumes, the tension and excitement among participants, and the intimate scenes happening away from the crowds.
The pace is intense but deeply rewarding.
You will work on timing, instinct, visual clarity, and the ability to navigate unpredictable situations with respect and awareness.

Shooting sessions are complemented by editing discussions focused on intention, sequencing, and authorship. The goal is to produce a meaningful, personal body of work rather than random carnival images.

For Whom
For photographers drawn to authenticity over spectacle.
If you enjoy street photography that is alive, raw, spontaneous, and deeply human, you’ll connect with this experience.
Experience helps, but it’s not required. Curiosity and openness matter more.

You Will Gain
A short documentary photo essay created during the expedition.
Thoughtful feedback on editing, selection, and sequencing.
A stronger understanding of how to work respectfully in intense public environments.
More instinctive and intentional shooting habits.

Gear Recommendations
Travel light.
One camera with a 28 or 35mm lens works perfectly for the rhythm of Carnival.
Bring a second battery at all times and enough SD cards.
A laptop with Lightroom or Capture One is recommended for review sessions.

Important Note
The itinerary remains flexible. Carnival is alive, unpredictable, and constantly shifting. We adapt to the most meaningful photographic opportunities, staying close to real moments and avoiding anything staged or superficial.
