Canon 5D Mark II Monochrome SOOC

Some cameras earn their reputation for one particular reason. The Canon 5D Mark II is often remembered for its beautiful color rendering, the kind of files that seem to glow straight out of camera. And rightly so.

But limiting this camera to color alone would be missing half the story.

During my assignment for France Football in 2024, I chose to work extensively in monochrome, shooting JPEGs straight out of camera, while I shot RAW + JPG, in order to give to my clients the work in color. In this case you are seeing no endless adjustments afterward. Just the camera, the scene, and the final image taking shape at the moment of exposure.

The results reminded me why the 5D Mark II remains such a compelling tool, even today.

Its black and white files have a richness that feels almost tactile. Tonal transitions are smooth, highlights roll off gracefully, and shadows retain a remarkable amount of depth. There is a certain solidity to the images, a weight that many modern cameras, for all their technical superiority, often struggle to replicate.

Monochrome from the 5D Mark II is not merely a conversion. It has character. It feels intentional.

Working this way also reinforces an approach I deeply value. Seeing in black and white before pressing the shutter changes everything. Composition becomes more essential. Light becomes the language. Emotion becomes clearer.

It looks film to my eyes. And I love it. It's character, but character that allows you not to shout, just like the best film does.

These photographs, made on assignment under real-world conditions, are a reminder that great black and white photography has very little to do with the latest technology. It is about how a camera interprets light, and how a photographer responds to it.

The Canon 5D Mark II still does that beautifully. Especially in monochrome. Especially straight out of camera.
