Goal!

I share this photograph I made for L’EQUIPE during the assignment

Mexico City, 10-27-2024: Alvaro Fidalgo at minute 89 realizes the winning goal for Club America against Monterrey. The final result is Club America 2 Monterrey 1.

THE PHOTOGRAPH

This image captures a dynamic and emotional moment in the game, a perfect scene for a sports editorial like L'Équipe. The framing emphasizes the decisive moment: the ball crossing the line with the goalkeeper on the ground and the celebrating player in the foreground. The vibrant colors of the players' jerseys, the pink net, and the intensity of the crowd in the background create a sense of immersion, placing the viewer right in the action. I positioned myself strategically to highlight not just the goal but the context: the reactions of the defending players, the tension in the air, and the euphoria of the fans.

This photograph exemplifies the storytelling nature of my photography: it's not just about the score but the emotions, the struggle, and the triumph all in one frame.

AS STREET PHOTOGRAPHER I AM FOCUSED ON EMOTIONS

The client's request was to offer a faithful portrait of what happens during a football match. Aware that I did not have telephoto lenses that could allow me to reach certain distances, my work on the field was oriented towards what I could do with my focal lengths, therefore through problem solving and therefore concentrating on what my photography could still guarantee.

What I consider myself a specialist in as a photographer is the documentation of emotions. The emotional aspect is therefore at the center of my attention to create shots that can offer sensations to the observer that are not just sterile technicality. Another crucial aspect is the necessity to make iconic images. As a photojournalist and street photographer I am a photographer dedicated to have a certian percentage of these shots during an event, in order to create not just the simple documentation of an event but something that you want to continue to see more and more.

LIMITATIONS AND MY ATTITUDE

Now can you imagine me in the pit where the other colleagues had bazookas as lenses and I had only my 50mm and 35mm lenses? It is crazy, no? Well, without feeling inferior I did what I know how to do. My work was not limited to the field. I was out all day giving social documentation around a soccer match. The focus is to create a guide of the city and not just the classic work of the match. As a photographer significantly different my equipment covered everything that was required by L'EQUIPE.

With extreme telephoto lenses I would certainly be able to produce those kind of match photographs but it was not the focus of my type of work. And if in the future they ask me for that kind of reportage, I will respond promptly on that occasion too.

WHO I AM AS A PHOTOGRAPHER

This job has given me even more confidence in my abilities. I have shown myself to be a very good photojournalist, a portraitist, I have worked in fashion and now also in the world of sports. Anyone who decides to hire me knows that they can count on a professional capable of carrying out the given assignment. But beyond this you can be sure of finding a photographer capable of creating iconic images that summarize the key moments of a given event. And I do it by also giving a lot of artistic connotation to the work.

I would share more and I could. But for the moment this image sums up what I did on the pit. So make it enough for you.
