Highlights February 2023

An intense month where I have brought together 2 sides of my photography

Pajamas. Mexico City, 2023. Alex Coghe

I think an important element of the street photography experience is fun. And I think this photograph is funny.

If we talk about essential components of street photography surely there is the ability to previsualize a scene. This photograph is an example.

How much does a posture determine a shot? The dynamism offered by the different positions offers a photo that has something to say without a doubt.

Mannequins are a great classic, if we want a cliche. But here I managed to offer something more. Not a simple photo of a mannequin but a head with a made up face set within a composition that shows so much of the context in which it is found. Everything works very well, the image is also pleasant for the colors and how they are distributed within the frame.

Telefonos. Mexico City, 2023. Alex Coghe

From the vibrant colors of the previous one to everything dull, almost like a black and white photo in this image. But the composition makes it seem almost like a photo taken in an era of which I have no memory, if not acuisita from readings and cinema. For me, there are not only people on the street. But this by now, following this blog, you will have understood.

These are shots that fewer and fewer people take, no matter how much photography history has had similar subjects and themes. A poignant moment that I couldn't not photograph. To be a concerned photographer on the street also involves shots like this. Because the street can be fun but also very, very hard.

News. Mexico City, 2023. Alex Coghe

People who read newspapers are an irresistible attraction for me.

Hands. Mexico City, 2023. Alex Coghe

Here it is, this month's blurred photo. But the moment was special: the pregnant woman, that hand touching her belly, the intimate gesture of an extraordinary moment captured. Then that sweatshirt with the skull makes everything even more special. I just couldn't have not included this photo.

It will be a purely graphic image, even quite similar to modern street photography, but it's my favorite photo taken this month. I achieved to capture the gesture, those hands of a salesman, the life inside the store, the only dynamic part of the whole composition. A composition that certainly works, straight to the point, but which also brings with it the mystery of the various symbols.

In your face. Mexico City, 2023. Alex Coghe

Since we've been living in the pandemic era, many photographers have wondered about the opportunity to get closer to their subjects. I did too. For me, close-up photography has never been a problem, even now it isn't. But it has never been solely and exclusively a question of getting closer. Street Photography is not about get closer. Anything depends on the situation and the image I need to make.

Notes

The second month of the year brought me many photographs. I have an awareness of where my photography is going even more than in the past. I'm seeing (and enjoying) the benefits of working with cameras that allow me to focus solely on my work even more than others I've used in the past. Much cheaper, less pretentious cameras that are perfect for my daily workflow. Essential and minimalist even more than before I can get exactly the street photography I want. And the results are visible. I see them. And so are the others. The appreciation is even increasing and I thank all those who have recently approached my work.

After all these years, in which I have achieved very important results, seeing that I still have the ability to capture new audiences is really important, rewarding and inspiring for me.
