Highlights June 2021
From this month the column changes. From now on I also propose some notes on each photo on the reasons for my choice to include it among the highlights of the month.
This image has been in my head for a long time. It happens that I pass in front of this electrician who has his dogs portrayed on the wall, in a very special mural.
Taking pictures in a tianguis (typical local market in its definition in Nahuatl): This is because of the red tarps above that give a decidedly not photographic dominant. In this case the girl was under a part where not all the market is covered and the light was barely decent. I consider the moment interesting because children in the West already have other types of toys. A little girl tenderly hugging a stuffed horse is a picture for me.
A cliche for sure and yet a photo that I like. As my readers know I am busy with my project PANDEMIC LIFE and I am always looking for scenes that can meet that theme.
As soon as I got off the bus I found this girl busy collecting her hair and I consider the gesture interesting from a photographic point of view.
Human gestures are the salt of street photography. When I find these Meyerowitz moments I have a photograph. In this case I think the shadow on the sidewalk adds more charm and mystery to the image. I love also the reflection of the building on the windows of the building.
Speaking of reflections, this photo is a sort of return to something that characterized the first part of my visual proposal as a street photographer. I like how I managed to isolate the subject and make it emerge in the chaos of reflections.
Oh, well, being in one of the richest avenues in the world a few weeks ago represented a change from the environments I usually photograph. An experience that I intend to repeat soon. This generous gift of light is the photo.
I know this man since several years. He sells books in front of Bellas Artes buildings and he is a native of Cuba. I hadn't met him for a long time and he offered me a couple of shots in exchange for a coin. I am not used to pay the subjects I photograph, but in this case I made an exception. The moment is difficult for anyone and and we must not forget that. I think is a good portrait and this is a good reason to include it here.
This is a group portrait which is not an actual portrait. I admit it: I stole the shot from the official photographers while the models were getting ready. I wanted an absurd moment and that went against the trappings of the official nature of certain shots. In this sense this is a street photograph in my opinion. Another wrong photo by purpose. When I have seen the girl I understood that I didn't have time to set the right lens distance, frame and shoot (I am using zone focusing with a manual lens) without avoiding losing spontaneity and could even turn around to understand my intentions. The day before I had seen a portrait of a completely out of focus female face that had enchanted me. I would make something similar.
When it comes to street photography I love the imperfection. Perfectly imperfect and interesting shot to me.
Some margin notes
I think this is the right way to share my highlights in order to offer to my readers some thoughts behind the shots made. I hope you appreciate the efforts. It was an interesting month. This has been a month of a lot of rain, where we have had the sun in bursts, but when it is there it feels like the violence of rain showers. I may not have taken memorable photographs this month, but shots that I are interesting to me. I'm dedicating myself assiduously to take pictures in Downtown. The results of this can be appreciate on my new street zine KOY. I share here the links of the first 2 issues:
