A monochrome edition

No title. Mexico City, 2024. Alex Coghe

The only photo in this selection that was created in color but having immediately seen it in black and white I had to convert it in post production, something unusual for me when we talk about street photography. This image is probably the cause of my return to black and white in an even more convinced way. In fact, it represents the awareness of still having something to say in monochrome, when we talk about street photography. After the day of this shot I also set my Olympus Pen EP5 to black and white and I'm doing a lot of street photography this way.

Street photography feeds on these moments. For me this is an old school photo.

Entering the soul of the city means this. If you take a photo like this with a 28mm you have to get closer, there are no alternatives. I have never seen street photography devoted only to things considered beautiful. For me the street represents an opportunity to denounce the human condition, which is not the same for everyone. My gaze is free of judgement, I rather observe and try to make people think.

With black and white photography I can get straight to the point. While color photography offers more information and, therefore, in a certain way it can also represent a greater ease of being effective, especially in these times, with black and white photography the strong link is with the emotional aspect.

While I believe that a photographer should keep details about the genesis of a photo confidential, even if someone might guess something, here I will simply say that I was fascinated by the scene from times gone by that only the smartphone breaks.

I think this is my favorite photo taken this month. Simple and yet I am fascinated by the mystery of this woman who advances into the future between black and white highlighted by the clothes and cars that delimit the frame.

What was I saying about emotions? Here, I believe the evocation of this humanity through a photograph is the very essence of photography.

I tend to differentiate the photography I take in the barrio compared to that of the historic center. In my photography in my neighborhood I offer an even greater willingness to get involved. Guys, this is a fantastic picture that is naturally born for a beautiful print. Contact me if you want it.

And in the barrio I found this watermark…of course i didn’t take only 1 picture and I will dedicate a post to this blog soon. The question mark is a goal for any street photographer.

Oh, I love this shot! I go to certain places in the city where I shouldn't, but damn I'm a photographer, and I can't help it!

Notes

The Olympus Pen cameras certainly have a role in my return to black and white. But it's not just this. I feel like my photography needs this now. In my artistic evolution the documentary component represents a hard core that permeates the entire experience. It's not a contradiction. But rather it is the awareness of what my research is based on.

I feel that my street photography wants to detach itself in an even clearer way from the idea that it is something fun and a game. Of course is fun to do it, but I think Street Photography is an opportunity to report the issues of the world in a way that makes us independents from the mainstream narrative. Furthermore, I am trying to do work that has an identity and is strongly linked to this country. This binds me even more closely to the research I am doing in the barrios and here too I have decided to associate it with black and white as a language.
