How to choose a Street Photography workshop

I have been teaching Street Photography for over 10 years. I given workshops also in universities, schools and photography associations. Through this post I share my ideas about choosing a good workshop when it comes to Street Photography.

The Street Photography workshops have become a fashion.

And the choice is immense, in particular when it comes to street photography and documentary. So to know how to choose is essential to live a useful experience and not wasting money. By following a few tricks we can avoid workshops made only to benefit those who propose them:

  • Make sure we are talking about a professional and not a guy who takes pictures on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Is the photographer making only Street Photography? It doesn’t matter if the workshop is about street photography, avoid it!

  • Check if the photographer/educator has been published: I mean real books, catalogs or magazines, while self-publications do not count.

  • To recognize who has a portfolio worthy of the name isa more difficult process if you don't have a real photographic experience, maybe you could ask with more experienced photographers.

  • Prefer private workshops or workshops with a limited number of participants. I recommend up to 5 for workshops focused on the practical experience and up to 12 for the basic workshops in a classroom.

  • The workshop is basically a photographic walk after which the "teacher" says goodbye and thank you? Forget it, if the photographer doesn’t engage with you in the next step to follow you, it means that is not a good workshop.

  • Don’t choose a workshop only because you like the style of that photographer. A photographer can be a master in what he does, but this doesn’t mean that he/she is also a good educator. And a good educator needs to be a good mentor.

  • To the end a good workshop lets you with a good feeling. Was a good day for you? What about the vibe? You would like to repeat the experience with the same educator?

Not anyone is made to teach just like not anyone can find useful a workshop. I may be the good one for you…or maybe not. And this is because photography is something very different. Where the results are achieved in many different ways. I can only testify how successful I have been with many of my students. And they are enthusiastic testimonials of my teachings.
