STREET PHOTOGRAPHY: my new editorial project open to street photographers worldwide

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

I'm really tired of seeing the name of street photography dirty by those who believe that an optical effect is good street photography.

And this despite the fact that many street photographers in the world don’t agree with that way of understanding and doing street photography. Photographs that we won't look at again are awarded at festivals and various photography competitions. And I am sure that among the many not selected in these competitions there are many who are much more deserving just as many now avoid participating in competitions where the name and history of street photography are tarnished by these dynamics that favor mediocrity, inconsistency and who have reduced street photography to a kind of game.

I have already expressed my thoughts on this. About my predilection for classic street photography, human oriented, gestures and people's expressions. I still believe Street Photography is what the masters have indicated: I am talking about Joel Meyerowitz, Helen Levitt, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, the first Bruce Gilden, Tod Papageorge, Vivian Maier, Anthony Hernandez. I'm open to evolutions, of course, but always when the sense of street photography is not lost.

Here, this project was born from this desire to bring street photography back to what it was before social media and before this drift towards easy laughter. To make it possible, however, I have to count on knowledgeable people, able to know what street photography is that has a lasting value over time. This is the reason why I decided to to enter a donation as a way to make an initial selection. Only convinced people who know what street photography is should enter the project and even if the payment still won't avoid proposals not in line with what I'm looking for, at least there will be a first selection.

The goal is ambitious: to propose a series of books of high content and value, presenting the best of the contemporary street photography scene. I, who knows me knows, will only evaluate the photographs. There will be no other dynamics to intervene and after all it will be important to make the best choices for my reputation as a photo editor and popularizer of street photography.

It will be my concern to offer wild cards that will allow photographers I respect to enter the project, with the sole purpose of making truly important and coveted books. Coveted by photographers above all who will know the importance of having publication within this project in their curriculum. For this project, which should be considered an evolution of my previous experiences, I have many ideas. But we need all the support to back it up. That's why donations will be as important as any brands interested in becoming sponsors.
