The definitive decalogue of Street Photography

Guys, I written this on my moleskine and now i share it with you. Let me know what you think…

Mexico City, 2022. Alex Coghe

1. Be always careful with light and learn how to master the three basic parameters: ISO, aperture and shutter speed. It is the basis of photography and the domination of these parameters will influence decisively your photographs.

2. Be confident. This means no fear and no negative thoughts while you are photographing. Taking pictures is absolutely legal and you are correct when taking pictures. Have fun because without fun there is not a real street photography experience.

3. Less is more. One camera, one lens, spare batteries and eventually rolls is all you need. By carrying just a camera and a small bag is the best way to enjoy and making photos on the street.

4. Don’t expect too much from yourself: keepers will come but is regular part of the experience to make a lot of photographs that are not masterpieces.

5. Go with the flow. You need to find yourself in the rhythm of the street. Get close to the subject because you need to have a good filled frame.

6. Stay in there. I am not talking to work a scene, but there are situations that impose you to make more than a shot. Stay still. Observe. Shoot when you think it's okay to do it. Take your time. Calmly and without thinking you are a weirdo. The goal is to have good photos. Try different perspectives and directions.

7. Shoot more. One of the main issues of photographers is that they make few photos. There is not excuse especially with digital cameras, but also if you choose film you can’t think to to take less to save money. If you are doing it go digital.

8. Be open mind.Try different techniques and exposure modes. Remember that any camera is different and you need to discover what works better with your tool. Try to use flash, long exposure, moving the camera, don’t stay in the comfort zone. Be a photographer always willing to learn.

9. Enjoy the community. Meet other photographers, create something cool with them and for them. Support the community by launching initiatives, meetings, chats.

10. Document yourself. Buy books, watch movies, listen music, go to art exhibitions, stay updated on photography, get to know the masters and contemporary photographers.
