The film look with DEHANCER

Guys, today I want to introduce you a super cool software for editing your photos. I use it both for my commercial and street photography work.

I love shooting film. I started photography when I was 10 years old with the Fujica M-A1 and I still enjoy to shoot film after all this time. That said, the pros of shooting digital are so many.

COLOR GRADING AND FILM SIMULATION AT ITS BEST WITH DEHANCER

Why? I started photography in analog era and the photography I studied and learned to love was made on film! So when I became a digital photographer nothing changed to me, thinking in terms of aesthethics. I want to have my photography responding to the snapshot aesthetics and that particular moood that only film photography has.

So why I am not shooting just film? I do, I shoot film but not only film. The advantages in shooting with digital cameras are too many to renounce to digital photography. I repeat often that film photography is a state of mind and I really believe this.

But we need to know how to achieve good organic work in digital. This includes the approach and settings in camera, but also what we do in post-production. Like anything in this world is a matter of good taste and sense of balance, equilibrium in order to obtain exactly what we want from our photography.

DEHANCER IS FUN, PERFECTLY INTEGRATED INSIDE MY LIGHTROOM CLASSIC, GIVING ME A EASY AND RELAXED EXPERIENCE WHILE I AM EDITING MY IMAGES

I love how is my workflow now and expecially the results produced with this software.

COLOR SCIENCE

Color grading is where Dehancer truly shines. The software’s color science is rooted in the analog tradition, offering rich, dynamic, and true-to-life colors. The ability to fine-tune every aspect of the color spectrum means you can achieve the exact mood and tone you envision. Whether it's the warm, nostalgic glow of a summer evening or the stark, dramatic contrast of a noir film, Dehancer gives you the tools to tell your story. And it allows to make it in a simple and fun way. I don’t know many softwares that you really enjoy to use, often is just that you have to use them.

HOW TO USE DEHANCER

The interface is very user friendly and straight to the point, with a selection of essential tools to quickly edit your photos. On the left side of the interface all the list and previews of film simulations available (you can create your own presets) and on the right side the developer tools where you can change the settings, turning off/on some effects, and really creating your own photography according to your vision.

I recommend to think in terms of the software, so I recommend to work in camera log with your cameras. This means choosing a preset such as mute or faithful and reset sharpness, contrast and saturation.

As you know I don’t shoot RAW and using JPG SUPER FINE with all my cameras since 2013. If you shoot RAW take in mind that DEHANCER doesn’t support RAW files natively, so you should convert the image in JPG before to import them. The camera log images in JPG SUPER FINE make me count with something similar to a RAW file, with a super flat image, ready to be edited. IT IS IMPORTANT: I RECOMMEND TO USE ONLY CAMERA LOG or converted JPGs kept in their flat rendering.

What I do, in any case is preparing the image for the editing in DEHANCER with Lightroom, so what I do before is to change the sharpness. If I need to crop the image (rare but sometimes happens) and when importing to choose to edit a copy with the lightroom settings. I will make changes also in exposure or boosting the contrast directly in DEHANCER.

I made a video showing the use of this software:

For anyone serious about their craft, Dehancer is an essential addition to your toolkit. It doesn’t just enhance your photos; it transforms them, infusing each image with the timeless magic of analog photography. It goes perfectly in accord with my approach and my way to live photography.
