The heart at the center of Street Photography

What do you want from a street photographer? What do we demand today? Have the goals changed?

Mexico City, 2023. Alex Coghe

For me the goals are always the same.

And maybe this is the reason why I have not lost enthusiasm after more than ten years. The ability to constantly renew and stimulate oneself in order to always have a fresh creative urgency: this is what I have. Today I am surprising many people, including myself, with a return to black and white which is allowing me to make new photography and feel alive for it.

Photographing in JPG and black and white greatly limits the possibilities. If I photographed in color even with direct JPG I could convert, but I can't do the same with black and white. And this, instead of limiting myself, stimulates me and keeps me focused on creating my work, the process of which for me really takes place with the recognition of the photograph and pressing the shutter button. I really apply the motto less is more. And above all now that film photography has become an expensive activity, I apply certain limitations digitally that save my creativity.

My imperfect photography remains at the center. The heart at the center of street photography to offer shots that make a lot of feeling. And then the black and white that returns must be read as a sublime structure to concentrate on the gestures and expressions, on the energy of the street, on that imponderable that leads my shots to that approach of the belly shot, done at the last minute moment, of intuition and immediate recognition, of speed of execution, of reaction to the stimulus.

I'm having fun.The heart of street photography.
