The Oaxaca Diaries 2021: Market @ villa de Zaachila
A visit to Zaachila is a must to greet some friends and enjoy a delicious nieve at the market.
We have to take a bus to reach Zaachila. I take some shots in the city to warm up.
While I'm on the bus I reflect that I'm not even interested in documenting like other times. Rather, I turn my attention to form and certain interlocking dynamics that work well with my street photography.
From this experience that counts a few days compared to the 2019 expedition I have a more selfish form of interpretation than what Oaxaca is during these days of the year.
Furthermore there is a desire to show the wide possibilities that this city offers to a street photographer. I am proposing street photography workshops also in this city that I recommend you.
Entered the Zaachila market, surprised by the number of people there. Because the traditional is on Thursday and in reality we didn't even expect to find a market. The only difference is that there are no animal sellers.
The 38mm mounted on my camera is more humanistic. In confined spaces such as those of a crowded market it allows me to enter a more intimate view of people.
Zaachila was historically the Zapotec capital of Oaxaca after Monte Albán fell under Mixtec control, therefore it became a focal point for commerce within the Oaxaca Valley. Today the Zaachila market is practically the same, vendors and consumers from the surrounding towns come to the Zaachila market to do business with all the things necessary for day to day.
The sensation is to visit a pre-hispanic market and I enter there just like a christian enters in a church.
I bought a bottle of mezcal, I tasted a nieve and then we headed to visit the pantheon of Zaachila for the first time. But I'll tell you this in the next post.
