This is why I stop to pay the photographers featured on my magazine
So far I have been the only one to pay photographers also for the electronic edition magazines. But I have to say I am done with this.
The decision is made and irrevocable.
Since 2017 I paid photographers featured on my magazines, in particular THE STREET PHOTOGRAPHER NOTEBOOK and PORTRAIT MAGAZINE. The accusation, however, made me yesterday by a photographer I published in an old issue, evidently annoying for having removed him from my contacts for other reasons, is serious and irritated me.
The idea that there is no transparent system for showing payments is limited to the fact that the site itself does not provide it. How can I show something where the system itself does not foresee it? But clearly this hobbyist photographer, who doesn't know anything professional, doesn't take into account that even I can't know if the agencies I work with don't sell my work without my knowledge. I just have to go on trust. Like anyone in this particular world.
Since 2017 I have challenged a system that never provides for payment to photographers. I did it with electronic editions and made the same when I started to propose the printed edition of the magazines. I did it often anticipating money. Because I believed that it was fair and also positive creating positive. I made it aware that while I was doing it the others were doing their business using the work of photographers and "paying" with visibility. I made it knowing that there are magazines asking to pay a fee to get featured. I did it for the pleasure of doing it despite the inconvenience, for example by making each issue a monographic issue to pay photographers even more.
Now I have to say stop.
I say stop so there will benot anymore discussion or stupid accusations. The photographers that were paid know what is the truth. Alex Coghe was the only one to pay photographers and this not existing anymore. I say stop because of a person, an hobbyst Italian photographer who know nothing about agencies, to make an example. Is not transparent the payment system? Or he is just pissed off because I removed from my contacts? Or maybe he can’t get that other photographers sold a lot of copies and he…ehm…NO.
I will continue to pay the photographers featured so far.
The magazine THE STREET PHOTOGRAPHER NOTEBOOK will be not anymore a monthly edition. It will be released only when a photographer voluntarily and for free will want to be part of the magazine. We are reaching the issue 100 and this means it will be maybe delayed.
THE STREET PHOTOGRAPHER NOTEBOOK will be a magazine like the others on the market: you will receive the electronic copy to be featured and that’s all. Take or leave it. But now you know that this happened because an hobbyst photographer from Naples made it.
