Why many street photographers are giving up on photography
It appears to be a virus. Just yesterday two street photographers announced it on youtube.
Why does it happen?
For many reasons, but basically everything starts from a great initial enthusiasm which, thanks to a not real passion, fades once the initial thrust is exhausted. If you do photography for others and not for yourse. If you think about becoming famous. If you do photography that you may like on instagram or in competitions, without ever giving and saying something truly yours. And we see this with many bloggers, at a certain point they realize that everything was flash in the pan and move on to something else.
And certainly the world situation from 2020 onwards has not favored certain photographers, suddenly seized by crisis and loss of inspiration. But it is not enough as an explanation. The real point is that street photography alone can't be enough if you think you live from photography and at a certain point when you see that you are unable to pay the bills then the big question comes: what is the point? Yeah, what's the point of doing street photography? Beware that the answer can have an epic dimension or make you slide towards the abyss and the abyss is called “I am done with photography”.
The reality is that someone has decided to establish themselves as an influencer of street photography which, for heaven's sake, given the times it can also work. But, as with all influencers, for how long? Waiting to be replaced by the new star of the firmament of the nothing invented craft.
And the answer is: before being a street photographer, worry about being a photographer. To have a talent that allows you to diversify and operate on different fronts. Because street photography is not enough if we talk about a career as a photographer. Let this be told by someone who has been a professional for over 11 years and makes it.
