Ci sono luoghi che sembrano non avere nulla da dire.

Una strada secondaria. Una casa ai margini di un paese. Un distributore di benzina. Un capannone. Un parcheggio. Una recinzione. Un piccolo centro abitato attraversato da una strada provinciale.

Luoghi qualsiasi.

Eppure è proprio dentro questa normalità che può nascere una fotografia.

Sulle strade della qualsiasità è un'esperienza fotografica individuale dedicata al paesaggio italiano e al modo in cui possiamo imparare a guardarlo.

Il punto di partenza è una certa tradizione della fotografia italiana che ha trovato nel paesaggio ordinario uno dei suoi territori più fertili. Luigi Ghirri, Guido Guidi e Mario Chiaramonte sono alcuni dei riferimenti attraverso i quali possiamo avvicinarci a un modo diverso di fotografare: meno interessato all'eccezionale e più attento a ciò che normalmente attraversiamo senza vedere.

Non si tratta di cercare il paesaggio italiano da cartolina.

Al contrario.

Si tratta di fotografare il territorio così come si presenta: costruito, modificato, abitato, abbandonato, stratificato.

LA QUALSIASITÀ

La "qualsiasità" è tutto ciò che appartiene alla dimensione del quotidiano.

Non il monumento, ma l'edificio accanto.

Non il centro storico, ma la sua periferia.

Non il paesaggio spettacolare, ma quello che incontriamo lungo una strada.

È in questa dimensione apparentemente insignificante che lavoreremo.

L'obiettivo non sarà semplicemente produrre delle belle fotografie, ma sviluppare una maggiore consapevolezza dello sguardo: capire perché ci fermiamo davanti a un determinato luogo, cosa rende una situazione fotografabile e come costruire un'immagine senza forzarla.

UN'ESPERIENZA ESCLUSIVAMENTE ONE-TO-ONE

Questa esperienza è riservata a una sola persona.

Non è un workshop di gruppo e non segue un calendario prestabilito.

È on demand.

Una volta all'anno apro la possibilità di realizzare questa esperienza in Italia. La destinazione e le date vengono concordate direttamente con il partecipante.

Questo permette di costruire quattro giornate interamente intorno alla persona, al suo modo di fotografare e al territorio che sceglieremo insieme.

Non ci sarà un itinerario preconfezionato.

Non ci sarà un programma turistico.

Partiremo dalle fotografie e dalle domande del partecipante e costruiremo un percorso attraverso il territorio.

La fotografia sarà il centro dell'esperienza, ma ci sarà anche spazio per parlare di immagini, autori, composizione, editing e progetto personale.

Il mio approccio parte dall'osservazione.

Camminare.

Fermarsi.

Aspettare.

Guardare nuovamente.

Fotografare meno e guardare di più.

Non cercheremo necessariamente fotografie spettacolari.

Cercheremo fotografie che abbiano una ragione per esistere.

L'ITALIA CHE NON CERCA DI ESSERE FOTOGRAFATA

L'Italia è stata fotografata infinite volte.

Le sue città d'arte, i monumenti, le piazze e i paesaggi iconici fanno parte di un'immagine del Paese ormai profondamente sedimentata.

Questa esperienza parte da un'altra Italia.

Quella delle strade provinciali, dei piccoli centri, delle periferie, delle aree industriali, delle campagne attraversate dalle infrastrutture, delle architetture ordinarie e degli spazi di passaggio.

Un territorio quotidiano e spesso apparentemente insignificante.

È proprio questa normalità a interessarci.

DOVE

Sulle strade della qualsiasità non ha una destinazione fissa.

L'esperienza può essere costruita in diverse parti d'Italia, scegliendo il territorio in funzione del tipo di ricerca fotografica che vogliamo affrontare.

Alcune delle aree che considero particolarmente interessanti sono:

LUZZARA E LA BASSA EMILIANA

Luzzara, il Po, gli argini, la campagna, i piccoli centri e il paesaggio costruito della pianura.

Un territorio profondamente legato alla storia della fotografia italiana e particolarmente adatto a una ricerca sul paesaggio ordinario.

FERRARA E TRESIGALLO

Ferrara e il territorio che la circonda, fino a Tresigallo.

La città, le periferie, le mura, le campagne e l'architettura razionalista di Tresigallo offrono un territorio ricco per lavorare sulla relazione tra spazio, architettura, geometria e paesaggio.

LA PIANURA EMILIANA

Modena, Carpi, Reggio Emilia e i territori circostanti.

Capannoni, strade, case, infrastrutture, centri urbani e campagna convivono in un paesaggio profondamente trasformato dall'uomo.

MANTOVA E IL BASSO MANTOVANO

Acqua, argini, piccoli centri, architetture agricole, strade e paesaggio della pianura.

Un territorio vicino per natura alla Bassa emiliana, ma con caratteristiche proprie.

RAVENNA E IL SUO TERRITORIO

Città, periferie, aree industriali, pinete, lidi, infrastrutture e paesaggio agricolo.

Un territorio particolarmente interessante per lavorare sul rapporto tra natura e territorio modificato dall'uomo.

LOMBARDIA E VENETO

Pavia, Cremona, Milano e il suo hinterland, la terraferma veneziana, Treviso e la pianura veneta possono offrire altre possibilità di ricerca sul paesaggio contemporaneo.

Cascine, capannoni, strade, centri commerciali, infrastrutture, piccoli paesi e territori agricoli convivono all'interno di paesaggi in continua trasformazione.

TOSCANA, UMBRIA E ROMA

Anche il Centro Italia può diventare il territorio della ricerca.

Non la Toscana delle cartoline, ma quella delle periferie e dei territori produttivi.

Non l'Umbria monumentale, ma il rapporto tra piccoli centri, infrastrutture e paesaggio.

Non la Roma dei monumenti, ma le periferie, il Grande Raccordo, l'Agro Romano, le borgate e i margini della città.

La destinazione finale viene sempre scelta insieme al partecipante.

Non scegliamo necessariamente il luogo più bello.

Scegliamo il luogo che ha qualcosa da osservare.

QUATTRO GIORNI DI FOTOGRAFIA

L'esperienza dura quattro giorni.

Il programma non è rigido e viene costruito in funzione del territorio, delle condizioni atmosferiche e del progetto fotografico.

Durante le giornate alterneremo sessioni fotografiche, spostamenti, pause e momenti di confronto.

Lavoreremo sul:

paesaggio agricolo

La fotografia sarà sempre il punto centrale.

EDITING

L'esperienza comprende una sessione individuale di editing.

Guarderemo insieme le fotografie realizzate durante i quattro giorni e parleremo di selezione, sequenza, coerenza e sviluppo di un possibile progetto personale.

L'obiettivo non è soltanto tornare a casa con delle fotografie.

È tornare a casa guardando in modo diverso.

PRIMAVERA 2027

La prima edizione di Sulle strade della qualsiasità sarà disponibile on demand nella primavera 2027.

Non verrà proposta come esperienza di gruppo.

Non ci saranno date multiple.

Una sola esperienza individuale verrà organizzata nel corso dell'anno.

Le date verranno concordate direttamente con il partecipante, tenendo conto della mia permanenza in Italia, della destinazione scelta e delle condizioni necessarie per sviluppare il lavoro.

A One-to-One Photographic Experience Through the Italian Landscape

There are places that seem to have nothing to say.

A secondary road. A house on the edge of a small town. A gas station. An industrial building. An empty parking lot. A fence. A small settlement crossed by a provincial road.

Ordinary places.

And yet, it is precisely within this kind of everyday landscape that a photograph can emerge.

On the Roads of the Ordinary is a one-to-one photographic experience dedicated to the Italian landscape and to the way we can learn to see it.

The starting point is a particular tradition within Italian photography that has found one of its richest territories in the ordinary landscape. Luigi Ghirri, Guido Guidi and Mario Chiaramonte are among the references through which we can approach a different way of photographing: less concerned with the exceptional and more attentive to what we normally pass without seeing.

This is not about searching for postcard Italy.

Quite the opposite.

It is about photographing the territory as it actually appears: built, transformed, inhabited, abandoned and layered over time.

THE ORDINARY

The "ordinary" is everything that belongs to everyday life.

Not the monument, but the building next to it.

Not the historic center, but its outskirts.

Not the spectacular landscape, but the one we encounter along the road.

This is where we will work.

The goal is not simply to produce beautiful photographs, but to develop a greater awareness of seeing: understanding why we stop in front of a particular place, what makes a situation photographically meaningful, and how to construct an image without forcing it.

AN EXCLUSIVELY ONE-TO-ONE EXPERIENCE

This experience is limited to one participant.

It is not a group workshop and it does not follow a fixed schedule.

It is on demand.

Once a year, I open the possibility of creating this experience in Italy. The destination and dates are arranged directly with the participant.

This allows us to build four days entirely around the photographer, their way of seeing and the territory we choose together.

There is no predefined itinerary.

There is no tourist program.

We begin with the participant's photographs, questions and interests, and build a photographic journey through the landscape.

Photography remains at the center of the experience, but there will also be time to discuss images, photographers, composition, editing and personal projects.

My approach begins with observation.

Walking.

Stopping.

Waiting.

Looking again.

Photographing less and looking more.

We are not necessarily looking for spectacular photographs.

We are looking for photographs that have a reason to exist.

AN ITALY THAT DOES NOT ASK TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED

Italy has been photographed countless times.

Its historic cities, monuments, piazzas and iconic landscapes are part of an image of the country that is already deeply established.

This experience starts somewhere else.

With provincial roads, small towns, suburbs, industrial areas, agricultural landscapes crossed by infrastructure, ordinary architecture and spaces of transition.

An everyday landscape that can often appear insignificant.

This is precisely what interests us.

WHERE

On the Roads of the Ordinary has no fixed destination.

The experience can take place in different parts of Italy, with the territory chosen according to the kind of photographic research we want to undertake.

Some of the areas I am particularly interested in exploring include:

LUZZARA AND THE LOWER EMILIA PLAIN

Luzzara, the Po River, embankments, farmland, small towns and the built landscape of the Po Valley.

A territory deeply connected to the history of Italian photography and particularly suited to a study of the ordinary landscape.

FERRARA AND TRESIGALLO

Ferrara and the surrounding territory, extending towards Tresigallo.

The city, its outskirts, walls, countryside and the rationalist architecture of Tresigallo offer a rich environment in which to explore the relationship between space, architecture, geometry and landscape.

THE EMILIAN PLAIN

Modena, Carpi, Reggio Emilia and the surrounding territories.

Industrial buildings, roads, houses, infrastructure, urban centers and farmland coexist within a landscape profoundly transformed by human activity.

MANTUA AND THE LOWER MANTUAN PLAIN

Water, embankments, small towns, agricultural architecture, roads and the landscape of the plain.

A territory naturally connected to the Lower Emilia, but with its own particular character.

RAVENNA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

The city, suburbs, industrial areas, pine forests, coastal settlements, infrastructure and agricultural landscapes.

A particularly interesting territory for exploring the relationship between nature and a landscape shaped by human intervention.

LOMBARDY AND VENETO

Pavia, Cremona, Milan and its outskirts, mainland Venice, Treviso and the Veneto plain offer other possibilities for exploring the contemporary Italian landscape.

Farmhouses, industrial buildings, roads, shopping centers, infrastructure, small towns and agricultural land exist side by side within landscapes that are constantly changing.

TUSCANY, UMBRIA AND ROME

Central Italy can also become the territory of the research.

Not postcard Tuscany, but its peripheral and productive landscapes.

Not monumental Umbria, but the relationship between small towns, infrastructure and territory.

Not monumental Rome, but its outskirts, the Grande Raccordo Anulare, the Agro Romano, peripheral settlements and the edges of the city.

The final destination is always chosen together with the participant.

We do not necessarily choose the most beautiful place.

We choose the place that has something to observe.

FOUR DAYS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

The experience lasts four days.

The program is flexible and is built around the territory, weather conditions and the photographic project.

The days combine photographic sessions, travel, breaks and conversation.

We will work with:

urban and peri-urban landscapes

suburbs

secondary roads

industrial areas

small towns

agricultural landscapes

infrastructure

urban edges

the relationship between built space and open land

presence and absence of people

Photography remains at the center of everything.

EDITING

The experience also includes an individual editing session.

We will look together at the photographs made during the four days and discuss selection, sequencing, coherence and possible directions for a personal project.

The goal is not simply to return home with photographs.

It is to return home seeing differently.

SPRING 2027

The first edition of On the Roads of the Ordinary will be available on demand in Spring 2027.

It will not be offered as a group experience.

There will be no multiple dates.

Only one individual experience will be organized during the year.

The dates will be arranged directly with the participant, taking into account my time in Italy, the chosen destination and the conditions needed to develop the work.
