The Poetics of Place - Landscape Photography Workshop in Oaxaca

$1,600.00

A Private 3-Day Mentoring Experience with Alex Coghe

Oaxaca is one of the most visually rich territories in Mexico. Colonial architecture, indigenous culture, rural landscapes, mountains and everyday life coexist in a place where the environment is deeply shaped by human presence.

This workshop approaches landscape photography not as the search for spectacular views, but as a way of reading a territory.

Architecture, streets, empty spaces, rural environments and subtle human traces become part of a broader visual narrative about place.

Over three intensive days you will explore Oaxaca and its surroundings while learning how to photograph landscape with awareness, patience and intention.

This is not a tour. It is a personal mentoring experience designed to help you develop a more thoughtful and author-driven photographic vision.

The workshop is offered one-to-one and on demand, allowing for complete focus on your photographic development.

Workshop Philosophy

Landscape is never neutral.

Every street, building, empty lot or open valley carries the marks of human presence and cultural history. This workshop focuses on learning how to recognize and photograph those relationships.

Rather than chasing dramatic scenes, we will work on observing how space, light and human intervention shape the visual identity of a place.

Oaxaca offers a unique environment for this approach: from dense urban textures to archetypal landscapes in the surrounding valleys.

What You Will Learn

• how to approach urban and cultural landscape photography
• recognizing meaningful relationships between architecture, space and people
• developing a personal visual language within landscape photography
• working with geometry, light and spatial balance
• incorporating subtle human presence within landscape images
• building a coherent photographic narrative of a place

The goal is not simply to produce photographs, but to develop a deeper way of seeing.

Workshop Structure

Day 1 — Urban Landscape

The workshop begins in Oaxaca City.

We will explore the historic center and surrounding neighborhoods focusing on:

• vernacular architecture
• urban textures and colors
• spatial relationships in the street
• everyday human presence within the urban environment

Throughout the day we will discuss visual decisions in the field, followed by a first image review session.

Day 2 — Territory and Peripheral Landscapes

The second day expands beyond the city center.

We will explore locations where landscape and human intervention meet, such as rural environments and peripheral areas of the valley.

Possible locations may include areas such as:

San Agustín Etla
Atzompa
Valley landscapes surrounding Oaxaca

Here the focus shifts toward landscape as cultural space, observing how architecture, agriculture and daily life shape the territory.

The day concludes with image editing and critique.

Day 3 — Archetypal Landscape

The final day explores one of the most iconic landscapes in the region.

Possible locations include:

Hierve el Agua
Mitla surroundings
Agave fields and open valley landscapes

The emphasis here is on minimal compositions, spatial clarity and atmosphere, allowing landscape to reveal its deeper visual and symbolic qualities.

At the end of the day we will conduct a final portfolio review and discuss how to develop your work further.
